How to Make a Croissant Breakfast Casserole with Brie
Video Recipe:
Spray a 9"x13" baking dish with non-stick spray or grease well with butter then set it aside. Then, you will preheat the oven to 350ยฐF/180ยฐC.
Break apart the croissants into large chunks and spread ยฝ of them into the baking dish.
Then, place the prosciutto over the croissants, and top this with the chunks of brie. Layer the remaining croissant pieces over the top of this.
Now make the custard by whisking together the eggs, heavy cream, mustard, and Parmesan cheese together in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper to taste. I used around 1 teaspoon salt and ยฝ teaspoon pepper. You can add other spices if you prefer, such as garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, or smoked paprika.
Now, pour the custard mixture over the croissants, brie, and prosciutto in the baking dish. Push down the croissants so they are all covered with the liquid custard.
Now, drizzle the melted butter over the egg custard and top of this casserole, and cover the pan with aluminum foil.
Bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and continue baking for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the egg custard has set in the center and is cooked through.
Serve with an additional sprinkle of cheese or fresh chopped green onions if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Can I Use Instead of Proscuitto In This Breakfast Bake?
If you can't find prosciutto, you could use ham, Canadian bacon, bacon, salami, or even sausage. While the flavors will be a little different, it will still work perfectly.
No matter what protein you add to the bake, make sure that it is cooked before adding. It will have time to cook while it bakes, but cooking ahead of time makes sure there isn't extra moisture in the casserole that would keep it from solidifying.
What Cheese Can I Use Instead of Brie?
Brie cheese really sets this dish above and beyond. It creates a dish that is perfect for every day but elegant enough for special occasions.
However, if you're not a fan of brie, you could use another type of cheese. Gruyere, Swiss, or even cheddar would work well in this dish. While the brie adds an extra bit of creaminess you won't get in other cheeses, you can easily mix and match a different cheese flavor into the recipe if you don't have brie on hand.
What is French Mustard?
French mustard is a type of mustard that is made with brown or yellow mustard seeds. It has a sharp, pungent flavor that is perfect for this casserole. If you can't find it, you could use another type of mustard, like dijon or whole-grain mustard.
How Long Will a Croissant Breakfast Casserole Keep?
This casserole will keep in the rerigerator for up to four days and up to 3 months in the freezer.
To keep it longer, make sure you store it in an airtight container or wrap it tightly with plastic wrap. Just be sure to store it in an airtight container or to cover it tightly with plastic wrap and/or aluminum foil.
Can You Freeze Croissant Breakfast Casserole?
Yes, this casserole freezes well. Just be sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before freezing. Date and label the casserole and keep it frozen for up to 3 months.
When you're ready to eat it, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and then bake it according to the recipe instructions.
If you want to bake directly out of the freezer, increase the cooking time to 90 minutes to ensure it is cooked through.
It can also be cooked and portioned to freeze for easy reheating on another day. This is often the easiest method as it can be cut into individual portions so you can grab just one at a time when needed.
Reheating Croissant Breakfast Casserole
This casserole can be reheated in the oven or in the microwave. If you're reheating it in the oven, just bake it at 350 degrees until it's heated through. If you're reheating it in the microwave, heat it on high for two to three minutes.
