How to Make Lasagna Roll-Ups
Video Recipe:
Spray a 9"x13" baking dish with non-stick spray then set it aside. Then, preheat the oven to 375ยฐF/190ยฐC.
In a large bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, egg, parmesan, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until combined well.
Now, in a large skillet, over medium heat setting, add the olive oil and onions. Cook the onions for 5 minutes, or until they are beginning to turn translucent and soften.
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring and breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Once cooked through, drain off any excess oil/liquids.
Now, add the Italian herbs, a sprinkle of salt and black pepper if desired, and the tomato sauce. Stir together, and then cook on low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and flavors combine.
While this simmers, cook the lasagna sheets as directed on the package.
Spread a spoon of the meat sauce onto the bottom of the baking dish spreading it evenly.
Now, on a clean cutting board, lay a cooked lasagna sheet. Add a heaping tablespoon of the ricotta mixture, and spread over the sheet evenly.
Top with a heaping spoon of meat sauce. Then, roll it up. Continue with this process until all of the lasagna rolls have been rolled and are lined up side by side in the baking dish.
Top the pasta rolls with any remaining pasta sauce then sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the pasta is heated through and the cheese has melted and is browning and bubbly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Are The 3 Main Components of a Lasagna?
There are three main components of a lasagna: pasta, sauce, and cheese. This comes together to make a delicious comfort meal.
The Pasta: Lasagna noodles provide the foundation for this dish. You can either buy pre-made lasagna noodles or make your own with a lasagna maker. This recipe is best with traditional noodles that have been cooked, while a regular lasagna would easily use oven-ready that doesn't need to cook first.
The Sauce: The sauce is what gives lasagna its unique flavor. You can either make a traditional red sauce with tomatoes, garlic, and herbs or use a white sauce like bechamel, which is made with butter, flour, milk, and cheese. Sauces like this one also often include ground beef or sausage for flavor.
The Cheese: The cheese helps to bind the layers of the lasagna together. Traditionally mozzarella cheese is used, but you can also use a combination of that with ricotta or parmesan for a more flavorful dish
Which is Better for Lasagna - Cottage or Ricotta?
When making lasagna, you can use either cottage cheese or ricotta. While it is a personal preference, I prefer to use ricotta. Ricotta cheese is smoother and creamier than cottage cheese, which gives the lasagna a much more luxurious texture. Additionally, ricotta cheese has a slightly higher fat content than cottage cheese so it adds even more flavor to the dish.
Do You have to Boil Lasagna Before Baking?
In a traditional layered lasagna, you do not have to boil lasagna before baking. Lasagna noodles are designed to cook in the oven with the other ingredients and become tender as they bake.
For this recipe, as you will be rolling the noodles with sauce on the inside, you will want to use a traditional noodle that has been cooked before baking.
What to Serve with Lasagna?
These lasagna roll ups are a hearty dish that goes great with a variety of sides. Some delicious side dishes to serve with lasagna include a light salad, garlic bread, and roasted vegetables. Additionally, you can also serve a glass of red wine to complete the meal.
If you want to stick with easy casseroles, you can serve this with our asparagus casserole, healthy broccoli casserole, or even this tasty spinach casserole. With as rich and cheesy as this recipe is, you may prefer to have something lighter on the side. It is, however, a meal you can serve all by itself and be totally satisfied.
